LePage bid to adjust environmental regulations divides Maine leaders

Supporters say the proposal simply levels the playing field that has for too long been tilted toward the environmental lobby. Detractors say it will fundamentally damage Maine’s premiere cache — its pristine natural beauty.

“You know, it never hurts to look at regulations,” said state Sen. Dawn Hill, D-York. “But my concern is that there is a huge leaning toward special-interest groups, the construction industry, chemical companies and similar industries that don’t want to be regulated. I think people like what they have, a state that supports tourism, fishing, logging and the outdoors. I am very concerned these proposals will change all that.”
