Maine Senate Democratic Response to AG's letter on LePage's political gimmick
AUGUSTA–The Senate Majority Office has received an opinion from Attorney General Janet Mills and Senate Majority leader Seth Goodall of Richmond has released the following statement in response to Mills’ letter on the governor’s “continuing resolution”:
“The Legislature has done its work. We have passed a responsible budget that is balanced. It’s a compromise budget but one that was worked on and agreed upon by more than a majority of Democrats, Republicans and Independents in the Legislature.
The governor’s “continuing resolution” proposal is unconstitutional as confirmed by the Attorney General. Additionally, his proposal would fail to pay our bills and stall progress for the people of Maine.
According to Attorney General Mills’ letter, ‘The Maine Constitution requires a balanced budget…any effort to continue the budget that expires on July 1, 2013 would result in a budget that is out of balance.”
It is clear that the governor’s “continuing resolution” is nothing more than a Washington-style political gimmick.”
