MEASURE TO INCREASE GAMING OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS RECEIVES A PUBLIC HEARING
Senator Patrick sponsors bill to allow veterans’ and fraternal groups to operate slot machines
AUGUSTA- Democratic Senator John Patrick of Rumford has introduced a measure to give small organizations access to gaming opportunities currently available only to casinos in Maine.
“We should provide our charitable groups with the same opportunities as large casinos,” said Senator Patrick. “Veterans and charitable groups have lost out on traditional gaming options while the big casinos have profited. This is an opportunity for these community groups to have their voices heard.”
The measure would allow eligible charitable groups, such as the American Legion, to operate slot machines. The slot machines would be allowed on the groups’ premises in towns that have approved the operation of slot machines by referendum.
A work session for LD 31, “An Act To Increase Gaming Opportunities for Charitable Fraternal and Veterans’ Organizations” will be held by the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee later this session.
