PRESIDENT ALFOND’S STATEMENT ON SCOTUS DECISION ON DOMA

Augusta—Senate President Justin Alfond of Portland released the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision striking down the Defensive Marriage Act.

“This is a historic day in America. With the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, we will now legally recognize what many of us have known all along; LGBT Americans have a full and equal stake in our society, and deserve equal recognition.

Last year, Maine stood proud and enshrined the equal right of marriage for all Maine families into law. Now, as we in Maine recognize their marriages as full and equal, they will be recognized by our federal government.

We have seen many advancements in the last few years in the cause of LGBT rights, and today will be remembered as a milestone on the march towards full equality.”
