Sen. Anne Carney, Rep. Michelle Boyer welcome Pond Cove Elementary School students to the Maine State House
AUGUSTA — On April 8, April 10 and April 15, Sen. Anne Carney, D-Cape Elizabeth, and Rep. Michelle Boyer, D-Cape Elizabeth, welcomed fourth grade classes from Pond Cove Elementary School to the Maine State House. The students toured the State House, visited the Senate and House Chambers and had the opportunity to ask questions about how the Legislature works.
“I was thrilled by how excited Pond Cove’s fourth graders were to be at the State House,” said Sen. Carney. “Visits like these are valuable opportunities for students to learn how their state government works and explore how subjects they learn in school, such as social studies and history, play a role in their everyday lives. I hope to see these students again in the State House when they grow up.”
“It was so much fun hosting the fourth-grade students from Pond Cove Elementary School,” said Rep. Boyer. “As a first-term legislator, I do not take for granted how special it is to meet with these students and help to instill an appreciation for state and local politics. They are the leaders of tomorrow, and I feel lucky be even a small part of their learning experience.”
On Tuesday, April 8, Mrs. Julie Merriam’s class visited the State House. They were recognized during the Senate session by Senate President Mattie Daughtry, D-Brunswick, and were recognized in the House by House Speaker Ryan Fecteau, D-Biddeford. On Thursday, April 10, Ms. Christine Capobianco’s class visited the State House. They were recognized in both the House and the Senate, and got to see Governor Janet Mills give a press conference. On Tuesday, April 15, Ms. Christine Tweedie’s class visited the State House. They were recognized in both the House and the Senate, and they went on a tour of the State House.
The Maine State House is open to the public Monday through Friday, and group and individual tours are available throughout the week.
