AUGUSTA — Earlier today, Sen. Donna Bailey, D-Saco, was sworn into the Maine Senate. Sen. Bailey was elected to her second term in the Senate in November.

Gov. Janet Mills administered the oath of office to Sen. Bailey and 34 of her Senate colleagues, all of whom have been elected to serve two-year terms. She represents the people of Senate District 31, which includes Buxton, Old Orchard Beach, and Saco.

“I am grateful for, and humbled by, the opportunity to continue serving the people of Buxton, Old Orchard Beach and Saco,” said Sen. Bailey. “I know that my constituents elected me here to get to work for them, and I am ready to do that work. We need to take action to help Mainers with their electricity and heating costs, as well as their property taxes and rents. We’ll use every tool available to provide relief for these things – and more.”

Sen. Bailey owns a small legal practice where she specializes in real estate, family, and probate law in Saco. She has previously served on the Saco Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals. Sen. Bailey also has served as the York County Judge of Probate for four years. In the Maine House, where she served two terms, she was the House Chair for the Judiciary Committee and House Chair of the Maine Indian Claims Task Force. During her first term in the Maine Senate, Sen. Bailey served as a member of the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee and the Government Oversight Committee. She was the Senate Chair for the Criminal Records Review Commission and the Pre-Petition Legal Representation Commission, as well as a legislative member of the Maine Child Welfare Advisory Panel.

The swearing-in ceremony was held in the Senate Chamber, and was attended by family and friends of the Senators, as well as the general public. A livestream of the event was made available to the general public, and can be viewed online at http://legislature.maine.gov/senate/.

Of the 35 members of the Maine Senate, there are 22 Democrats and 13 Republicans. Fourteen are women and 21 are men. There are 13 new members of the Senate: seven have recently served in the House of Representatives, and six have no previous legislative experience. Twenty-two members are incumbents.

The Legislature will reconvene at the start of the New Year. Learn more about Sen. Donna Bailey and subscribe to her weekly e-newsletter at www.mainesenate.org. You can also follow Sen. Bailey on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DonnaBaileyForSenate.
