AUGUSTA — On July 1, Governor Janet Mills signed into law LD 1981, “An Act to Implement the Recommendations of the Emergency Medical Services’ Board and the Blue Ribbon Commission to Study Emergency Medical Services in the State,” a bill sponsored by Sen joe Baldacci, D-Bangor.

“Our first responders are vital pillars that hold up the safety and security of our communities,” said Sen. Baldacci. “They are there when disaster strikes and answer the call when there is an emergency. They have always given their attention to us, and now we need to give our attention to them. I am grateful for the Governor’s signature and for seeing the need to support our first responders and the safety of our communities.”

LD 1981 directs the EMS Board, in consultation with the Commissioner of Public Safety, to appoint the EMS Licensing Board to carry out the licensing of EMS personnel and EMS training centers. It also directs the Licensing Board to carry out the investigation of and adjudication of complaints. The bill includes instructions for other administrative functions, including membership, licensing fees and fines.

The bill will go into effect on September 24, 2025.

Sen. Baldacci represents District 9, which includes Bangor and Hermon in Penobscot County.
