AUGUSTA — On Wednesday, Sen. Joe Baldacci D-Bangor, hosted brothers Brandon and Brayon Nguyen of Bangor High School in Bangor who were Grand Award Winners at the 2024 Maine State Science Fair. Brandon and Brayon were accompanied by their parents, Vanessa and Kevin.

“It was a pleasure having Brandon and Brayon at the State House today, I appreciate them taking the time to come down to Augusta,” said Sen. Baldacci. “Seeing young students succeed in their passions and show interest in difficult topics is a joy to see. It’s important to recognize and help encourage our youth to grow and flourish in their passions.”

For their project, Brandon and Brayon created a micro hydropower and crop monitoring system, which they integrated into a standard hydroponic structure. The system circulates water and nutrients and rotates a hydroelectric water wheel, which in turn accounts for power usage from energy-consuming components. They will be travelling to Los Angeles to represent Maine at the 2024 International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), to be held later this spring.
