Sen. Baldacci shares 2026 MDOT work plan for state bridge and road projects
AUGUSTA – On Friday, March 6, Sen.Joe Baldacci, D-Bangor, announced the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for Senate District 9. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation upgrades and maintenance projects.
According to the Maine DOT, the three-year work plan makes a $4.5 billion investment in the construction and maintenance of transportation infrastructure across the state. It includes 2,798 individual work items for the calendar years 2026, 2027 and 2028.
In 2026, the Maine DOT will undertake numerous projects to enhance transportation in Senate District 9, including improvements to Bangor Airport and highway safety, as well as upgrades and replacements for bridges across the district.
“I’m excited to see Maine DOT’s investment in Bangor and Hermon,” said Sen. Baldacci. “The greater Bangor area relies heavily on the highways and roads around here, and the improvements to pedestrian infrastructure will be very welcome in the downtown area.”
The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work by MDOT for communities in Senate District 9 in calendar year 2026:
Aviation
- Bangor: Rehabilitating Taxiway A (70).
- Bangor: Rehabilitating Runway 15/33.
- Bangor: Rehabilitating portion of Runway 15/33 Phase IV.
Bicycle/Pedestrian
- Bangor: On-road sidewalk/trail on Mount Hope Avenue, beginning at Saratoga Avenue and extending northeast 0.55 of a mile.
Bridge and Structural Maintenance:
- Bangor: Replacing Chase Road/I-95 Bridge (#5934) over Interstate 95 northbound and southbound, located 0.38 of a mile east of Stillwater Avenue.
- Bangor: Rehabilitating Central Street Bridge (#0896) over Kenduskeag Stream, located 0.05 of a mile south of Harlow Street.
- Bangor: Rehabilitating Washington Street Bridge (#2913) over Kenduskeag Stream, located 0.01 of a mile east of Kenduskeag Plaza Way.
- Bangor: Rehabilitating Bulls Eye Bridge (#3301) over Kenduskeag Stream, located 0.17 of a mile north of Ohio Street.
- Bangor, Brewer: Improving Veterans Remembrance Bridge (#1558) over Penobscot River, located on the Bangor-Brewer town line.
- Bangor, Brewer: Rehabilitating Penobscot Bridge (#2038) over Penobscot River, located on the Brewer-Bangor town line.
- Bangor, Brewer: Replacing wearing surfaces of Joshua Chamberlain Bridge (#5312) over Penobscot River and Railroad Yard, located 0.06 of a mile northwest of the Brewer town line.
- Bangor, Brewer: Improving Interstate 395 Bridges.
- Bangor, Brewer: Replacing Interstate 395 Bridges. Bridge Investment Program (BIP) Grant recipient.
Drainage Maintenance
- Bangor, Hampden, Hermon, Newburgh: Ditching and replacing culverts on Route 221 in Bangor and Glenburn, beginning at the intersection of Route 15 in Bangor and extending 6.77 miles north to the Glenburn-Hudson town line.
Highway Paving
- Bangor: Main Street, beginning at Summer Street and extending north 0.34 of a mile. Route 2, beginning at Union Street and extending east 0.43 of a mile. Route 2W, beginning at Harlow Street and extending southwest 0.29 of a mile.
- Bangor: Stillwater Avenue,beginning 0.03 of a mile north of Tripp Drive and extending north 0.08 of a mile.
- Bangor: Portions of Route 2,beginning at the Hermon town line and extending east 1.53 miles to Odlin Road and beginning 0.45 of a mile north of Interstate 395 and extending north 0.34 of a mile to Hammond Street. Includes 0.08 of a mile cut from Odlin to Hammond.
- Bangor: Grove Street,beginning at Stillwater Avenue and extending south 0.12 of a mile to Mount Hope Avenue.
- Bangor: Hancock Street, beginning at Oak Street and extending southwest 0.09 of a mile to Exchange Street.
- Bangor: Howard Street,beginning at Mount Hope Avenue and extending south 0.53 of a mile to State Street.
- Bangor, Glenburn: Route 116,beginning at Route 15 and extending north 7.23 miles to Route 221.
- Hampden, Hermon: Coldbrook Road, beginning at Interstate-95 overpass and extending north 0.84 of a mile to Autocar Lane.
Highway Safety and Spot Improvements
- Bangor: Located at the intersection of Route 15B and North Park Road.
- Bangor, Hampden, Hermon, Newburgh: Replacing signs on Interstate 95 in Newburgh, Hampden, Hermon and Bangor beginning at the intersection of Route 69 and extending 7.92 miles east.
- Bangor, Hampden, Hermon, Newburgh: Replacing signs on Interstate 95 SB in Bangor, Hermon, Hampden and Newburgh, beginning 320 feet northeast of the intersection of Ammo Park and extending 7.79 miles southwest.
- Hermon: Installing/replacing traffic signals in a Business Partnership Initiative. Located at the intersection of Route 2 and Billings Road.
Rail/Highway Crossings
- Bangor: Railroad crossing (#051300D) located 0.41 of a mile north of Bunker Lane.
Special Programs
- Bangor: Pilot projects for traffic signal operations.
