Miss Maine and Miss Maine Outstanding Teen 2021 shared personal stories of surviving sexual assault with lawmakers, advocated for change

AUGUSTA – Last week, Sen. Joe Baldacci, D-Bangor, joined the Legislature in welcoming Miss Maine 2021, Mariah Larocque of Bangor, and Miss Maine Outstanding Teen 2021, Lauren Jorgensen of Winthrop to the State House. The distinguished guests sang the national anthem inside the Senate chamber and shared their stories as survivors of sexual assault who are using their platforms to be advocates of change.

“It was an honor to have both of these young women share their powerful stories with the Legislature,” said Sen. Baldacci. “It takes a lot of courage to stand up for what is right, and to have that important conversation before lawmakers is even more admirable. I am certain they’re making both their communities proud.”

As a survivor, Mariah is passionate about combating child sexual abuse, human trafficking and child exploitation. Through her social impact initiative, A Survivor’s Purpose, and her partnership with Thrive New England, Mariah continues to address these issues. Similarly, Lauren created her own community service platform, My Body, My Voice, to promote awareness of and education on sexual assault and violence.
