Sen. Beebe-Center introduces legislation to support Maine State Ferry Service retirees

AUGUSTA — On April 29, 2025, Sen. Pinny Beebe-Center, D-Rockland, introduced LD 280, “An Act to Establish Lifetime Ferry Passes for Retired Maine State Ferry Service Employees,” to the Joint Standing Committee on Transportation. This bill would restore complimentary vehicle passes to Maine State Ferry Service (MSFS) retirees.

“The goal of this legislation is to help island residents who are also Maine State Ferry Service retirees have an easier time getting back to the mainland for doctor’s appointments, groceries, gas and any other necessity activity,” said Sen. Beebe-Center. “This benefit was promised to retirees before it was revoked. We need to do right by our retirees and not forget about the island residents who have long kept our boats running safely and efficiently.”

LD 280 would allow Maine State Ferry Service retirees to take two complimentary round trips a month with a vehicle, provided they give at least 24-hour notice for a reservation. Sen. Beebe-Center plans to put in an amendment that would apply this benefit only to retirees who are currently island residents.

The bill awaits further action in committee.
