Sen. Bellows unveils work plan for state bridge and road projects
Sen. Shenna Bellows, D-Manchester, is pleased to announce the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for the state and region. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation projects throughout the state.
“Investment in transportation infrastructure is one of the best investments we can make to support our economy,” said Sen. Bellows. “I’m thrilled by the projects planned for our communities that will benefit families and businesses in our state.”
According to the MDOT, the work plan includes more than $2.44 billion worth of construction and maintenance, which includes more than 1,900 work items. The three-year plan estimates MDOT will invest in 199 miles of highway construction and rehabilitation; 1,142 miles of pavement preservation; 1,800 miles of light capital paving for roads and highways; 203 spot and safety improvements; and 203 bridge projects.
The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work for Senate District 14 – Chelsea, Farmingdale, Gardiner, Hallowell, Manchester, Monmouth, Pittston, Randolph, Readfield, West Gardiner, and Winthrop – in 2019:
Paving projects:
- Work on Route 9 in Chelsea and Randolph from 0.02 miles north of Route 27 going 4.52 miles to the Augusta city line
- Work on Hallowell Litchfield Road in Farmingdale, Hallowell, Litchfield, and West Gardiner from Route 197 going north 15.21 miles to the end of Middle Street
- Work on Plains Road and Pond Road in Gardiner, Litchfield and West Gardiner from Hallowell Road going north 9.54 miles to Route 9
- Work on Pond Road and Neck Road in Litchfield, Manchester and West Gardiner from Hallowell Litchfield Road going north 8.41 miles to Route 202
- Work on High Street in West Gardiner from Hallowell Litchfield Road going east 4.71 miles to the Gardiner Town Line
- Work on Route 201 in Hallowell and Augusta from 0.22 miles north of Winthrop Street going north half a mile and beginning 0.23 miles north of Maple Street going north 1.06 miles
- Work on Whitten Road beginning at Winthrop Street going north 0.41 miles
- Work on Route 135 in Monmouth, Readfield and Winthrop from Route 132 going north 12.82 miles to 3.15 miles past Route 202
- Ultra-thin bonded wearing course on Route 202 in Manchester and Winthrop from 0.03 miles west of Annabessacook Road going northeast 1.44 miles and beginning at Peck Farm Road going northeast 4.16 miles
Bridge work:
- Bridge culvert rehabilitation on Rolling Dam 2 Bridge over Rolling Dam Stream on Route 24 in Gardiner
- Bridge substructure rehabilitation on Tappan Bridge over Cobbossee Stream on Hallowell Litchfield Road at the West Gardiner/Litchfield town line
- Preliminary engineering of bridge replacement for Babcock Bridge over Cobbosseecontee Stream on Route 126 at the Litchfield/West Gardiner town line
- Painting on Route 201 Bridge over Interstate 295 both northbound and southbound in Gardiner
- Painting on Pond Road/I-295 Bridge over Interstate 295 on Pond Road in West Gardiner
- Repairing the fascia and deck on the Tacoma Lake Bridge over the Sand Pond Outlet on Route 126 in Monmouth
- Repairing the backwall and abutments under the Route 201/I-295 Southbound Bridge over Interstate 295 on Route 201 in Gardiner
Highway safety improvements:
- Preliminary engineering of improvements to Route 201 in Augusta and Hallowell from Maple Street going north 1.11 miles and continuing 0.22 miles north of Winthrop Street and going north half a mile
- Preliminary engineering of rehabilitation work on Route 202 in Augusta and Manchester from 0.16 miles east of Granite Hill Road going east 1.67 miles
Rail operational improvements:
- Preliminary engineering of upgrades to the Pan Am Mainline from Yarmouth to Waterville
Ditching, culvert and catch basin maintenance:
- Ditching and replacement of seven culverts on Route 135 between Route 32 and Route 17 in Monmouth
- Replacing two catch basins on Route 27 located 0.08 miles south of Route 126 in Pittston
- Replacing seven culverts on Route 194 between Route 218 and the Whitefield/Alna town line in Pittston and Whitefield
- Replacing a culvert on Route 41 located 0.02 miles north of Beans Mills Road in Readfield
- Ditching and replacing culverts in several areas on Route 135 from Scribner Hill Road in Manchester going north through Readfield to 0.54 miles north of Minot Hill Road in Belgrade
