Sen. Brenner celebrates reappointment of Owen McCarthy of Gorham to the University Of Maine System Board Of Trustees
AUGUSTA — On Thursday, October 10, the Maine State Senate voted to confirm the appointment of Owen McCarthy of Gorham to the University of Maine System Board Of Trustees.
“I was proud to confirm Owen McCarthy to the Board of Trustees,” said Sen. Brenner. “As a proud mother of a Black Bear and Husky Alum, I understand the value of state colleges to our state and am confident Mr. McCarthy has the experience to provide crucial insight to the Board of Trustees.”
Owen McCarthy is graduate of the University of Maine at Orono. He is the co-founder of MedRhythms which delivers neurologic music therapy for those suffering from brain injuries or diseases.
Last month, the Legislature’s Education and Cultural Affairs Committee conducted a confirmation hearing for McCarthy, where he received a bipartisan 9-0-4 vote in support of his confirmation.
The University of Maine System Board of Trustees is the governing body that has full legal responsibility and authority for all seven universities in the University of Maine System. The Board is charges with appointing a Chancellor, each University President, approving the establishment and elimination of academic programs, sets tuition rates, operating budgets and more. The Board consists of sixteen members, fifteen of which are appointed by the Governor and approved by the Legislature. The Maine Commissioner of Education serves as a member ex officio. Trustees are appointed for a five-year term and may be reappointed once. A student member of the Board is appointed for a single two-year term.
