Sen. Carney celebrated for perfect voting record on reproductive rights

AUGUSTA — Sen. Carney, D-Cape Elizabeth, earned a perfect score from Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund for votes to protect reproductive rights and improve access to fundamental health care. Sen. Carney is one of 20 senators to earn a perfect score for their 2025 voting record.

“As the Senate chair of the Judiciary Committee, which is responsible for considering many of these critically important bills, I am proud of my colleagues’ collective commitment to protecting Mainers’ health and safety through continued access to essential health care services,” said Sen. Carney. “In the face of unceasing efforts to restrict access to reproductive health care and erode protections for patients and providers, I will continue to stand up to ensure that Mainers can safely get the care they need.”

Planned Parenthood scored the votes of Maine legislators on 12 bills, including seven bills that would restrict access to abortion and reproductive care. This year, in the face of massive federal cuts, the Legislature invested $6 million in Maine’s family planning services network, which provides essential care for patients, including birth control, cancer screenings and testing and treatment of STIs, regardless of ability to pay. Sen. Carney also supported a new law that will protect prescribers of safe, effective medication abortion by allowing a provider to omit their name from prescription labels.

Sen. Carney has earned a perfect voting score from Planned Parenthood every year since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and eliminated the nationwide right to abortion.
