Sen. Carney sworn into Maine Senate

AUGUSTA — Earlier today, Sen. Anne Carney, D-Cape Elizabeth, was sworn into the Maine Senate. Sen. Carney was elected to her second term in the Senate in November.

Gov. Janet Mills administered the oath of office to Sen. Carney and 34 of her Senate colleagues, all of whom have been elected to serve two-year terms. She represents the people of Senate District 29, which includes South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and part of Scarborough.

“I am honored to continue representing South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and part of Scarborough in the Maine Senate,” said Sen. Carney. “During my first term, you reached out to me and shared your priorities and thoughts. I’m humbled by the trust you’ve placed in me, and grateful for your guidance and direction. Together, we’ve worked on bills and legislation that make health care more affordable, clean up our environment, advance civil rights and promote economic security for Maine families.”

Sen. Anne Carney is an attorney whose practice focused on civil rights, employment and municipal law. She lives in Cape Elizabeth. In 2018, Anne was elected to the Maine House, where she was a member of the Labor and Housing Committee and belonged to the Children’s Caucus, the Caucus on Aging and the Coastal and Climate Action Caucus. In 2020, she was first elected to the Maine Senate, she was Senate Chair for the Committee on the Judiciary. Sen. Carney was also a member of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee.

The swearing-in ceremony took place in the Senate Chamber, with family and friends of the Senators, as well as the general public, in attendance. A livestream of the event was made available to the general public, and can be viewed online at http://legislature.maine.gov/senate/.

The Maine Senate has 35 members, including 22 Democrats and 13 Republicans. Fourteen Senators are women and 21 are men. There are 13 new members of the Senate: seven recently served in the House of Representatives, and six have no previous legislative experience. Twenty-two members are incumbents.
