Sen. Claxton introduces bill to protect Mainers from surprise medical bills
AUGUSTA — On Thursday, Sen. Ned Claxton, D-Auburn, introduced LD 367, “An Act To Require Timely Billing for Health Care Services.” The bill was the subject of a public hearing before the Legislature’s Committee on Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Service.

“As consumers, we’re expected to pay our bills on time. It’s just a part of life that we all accept. We do our best to plan ahead, put money aside and stay on top of dates and deadlines. But if you have no idea when a bill is going to arrive on your doorstep, how can you possibly plan ahead?” said Sen. Claxton, a retired doctor. “To be surprised by a bill months and months after the fact is unacceptable. Especially now, people need to know what expenses are coming their way. This legislation would make sure patients receive bills within a reasonable amount of time.”
LD 367 would prohibit a health care provider or facility from charging a consumer for a service if the facility fails to bill the consumer within six months.
The bill faces further action in committee.
