“The last year and a half has exposed disparities in our workforce that have existed for years. Nevertheless, Maine workers have continued to show up for us day in and day out, despite risks to their own personal health. It is imperative that, with every new bill we pass or project we authorize, Maine workers are getting the best protections we can offer,” said Sen. Hickman. “I am incredibly proud of my voting record to fight for the best interests of working Mainers and honored to have received a perfect score from Maine AFL-CIO.”

As chair of the Legislature’s Labor and Housing Committee, Sen. Hickman has a long track record of showing up and fighting for Maine workers and families. A majority of the bills scored by the AFL-CIO started in the Labor and Housing Committee, where Sen. Hickman facilitated thoughtful and productive debates that resulted in the best outcomes for Maine workers. This year, he supported a bill that prioritizes labor standards for affordable housing building projects. He also helped lead the Labor and Housing Committee to defeat “right-to-work” legislation.

Founded in 1956, the Maine AFL-CIO is a state federation of more than 160 local labor unions, representing more than 40,000 Maine workers and retirees. The organization works to improve the lives and labor conditions of not just its members but working people all across the state.
