AUGUSTA — On Thursday, Gov. Janet T. Mills announced in a Portland Press Herald op-ed that she supports the Legislature’s Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) proposal. The Governor also wrote that she will sign the recently negotiated supplemental budget, which includes funding for PFML, once it comes to her desk.

Gov. Janet Mills: Why I’m supporting paid family and medical leave

Sen. Mattie Daughtry, D-Brunswick, and Rep. Kristen Cloutier, D-Lewiston, who co-sponsored LD 1964, “An Act to Implement the Recommendations of the Commission to Develop a Paid Family and Medical Leave Benefits Program,” released the following statement in response:

“We thank Gov. Mills for her thoughtful consideration, negotiation and now support of a statewide Paid Family and Medical Leave policy for Maine. Going into this effort, from the very first commission meeting, we knew the best path forward was to listen to everyone’s concerns, find common ground and craft a compromise plan that balances the needs of businesses, workers and families. We’re incredibly proud of all the work that has gone into the proposal we put forward, and we’re excited to see Gov. Mills sign this bill and its accompanying funding into law.”
