ROCKLAND — Senator David Miramant, D-Camden, met recently with students at the Penobscot School, a nonprofit school dedicated to international exchange and language immersion, located in Rockland.

“I had an excellent discussion with students of all ages from all over the world — Saudi Arabia, Peru, Colombia, Morocco and China,” Sen. Miramant said. “They learned about some of Maine’s political practices and traditions, and I learned about theirs. I have to say, I probably got the better end of the deal.”

The senator dropped by to discuss civics and tour the facility, which has operated for 30 years and offers foreign language classes, English immersion programs and an array of cultural events.

“I went there to speak about politics and we ended up talking about much more important things, such as pursuing careers that inspire and stimulate,” Sen. Miramant said. “I commend the Penobscot School for promoting these kinds of discussions. I know from experience that meeting and getting to know people from diverse backgrounds, with different points of view, is a critical life experience. The more we communicate with each other, the more we see how much we have in common.”

According to the Penobscot School’s website, more than 6,000 locals and 500 international students have participated in the school’s programs, advancing their foreign language skills and learning about the world. For more information, visit penobscot.us.
