AUGUSTA — Earlier today, Sen. Donna Bailey, D-Saco, was sworn into the Maine Senate. Sen. Bailey was elected to her third term in the Senate in November.

Gov. Janet Mills administered the oath of office to Sen. Bailey and 34 of her Senate colleagues, all of whom have been elected to serve two-year terms. She represents the good people of Senate District 31, which includes Buxton, Old Orchard, and Saco.

“As I am sworn in for the 132nd Maine State Legislature, I am full of gratitude for — and deeply humbled by — the support that the people of Senate District 31 continue to give me,” said Sen. Bailey. “Looking ahead to my third term in the Maine Senate, I know — from listening to all of you — that my colleagues and I have more work to do. From affordable housing and climate adaptation to human rights and property tax relief, we need to ensure that our laws and policies protect and take care of Maine people. I accept this serious responsibility, and it remains an honor and a privilege to represent you in Augusta.”

Sen. Bailey has served two terms in the Maine Senate. She is currently the Senate Chair of the Health Coverage, Insurance, and Financial Services Committee and a member of the Judiciary Committee. She is the Senate Chair of the Criminal Records Review Committee, the Task Force to Evaluate the Impact of Facility Fees on Patients, and the Commission Regarding Foreign Trained Physicians Living in Maine.

She also serves as the only member of the Legislature on the Child Welfare Advisory Panel. In her first term in the Senate, Sen. Bailey served on the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee and the Government Oversight Committee.

Prior to serving in the Senate, Sen. Bailey was a two-term member of the Maine House of Representatives, in which she represented part of Saco.

The swearing-in ceremony was held in the Senate Chamber and was attended by family and friends of the Senators, as well as the general public. A livestream of the event was made available to the general public and can be viewed online at http://legislature.maine.gov/senate/.

Of the 35 total members of the Maine Senate, there are 20 Democrats and 15 Republicans. Fifteen are women, and 20 are men. There are seven new members of the Senate, three of which most recently served in the House of Representatives. Twenty-eight members are incumbents.
