Sen. Duson bill to continue efforts to develop Maine’s ocean-based “Blue Economy” sent to Governor’s desk
AUGUSTA — On June 25, 2025, a bill to reconvene and continue the work of the Blue Economy Task Force (BETF), which focuses on centralizing and developing Maine’s ocean-based economy, was enacted by the Maine Senate and sent to the desk of Gov. Janet Mills. Under LD 1023, sponsored by Senate Assistant Majority Leader Jill C. Duson, D-Portland, the Task Force will now focus on strategies for implementing the recommendations of the original BETF report.
“When the Blue Economy Task Force reconvenes, industry leaders of all stripes will continue their work to develop Maine’s emerging ocean-based economy, attract opportunity and strengthen the state’s largest and oldest heritage industry — our ocean,” said Sen. Duson. “From our harbors to the foothills, Maine’s future will greatly benefit from the continued efforts of the task force. I look forward to following this important work as it moves through the process.”
In the 131st Legislature, Sen. Duson led the passage of LD 1286, which established and convened the first iteration of Blue Economy Task Force. The recommendations include establishing a center for the Blue Economy, prioritizing investment, curriculum, research and development in blue economy related sectors. The task force also recommended a continuation of its work.
The bill now goes to the Governor’s desk for her signature.
