AUGUSTA — On Tuesday, Jan. 23, Sen. Nicole Grohoski, D-Ellsworth, met with Isle au Haut residents who were visiting the State House for a meeting of the Maine Islands Coalition. Members of the Maine Islands Coalition shared updates from their communities, key areas of focus for long-term resilience, as well as what support is needed from state officials.

“It was great to meet with members of the Maine Islands Coalition from my district,” said Sen. Grohoski. “Our island communities are an important part of our state, and they face many similar challenges as mainland communities, with the added logistical complications and expense of only being accessible by boat or air. The islands are tackling these issues – like internet access, housing, and climate resilience – with determination and creativity, and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from them and support their efforts.”

The Maine Islands Coalition (MIC) is a collaboration of 15 unbridged, year-round island communities that provides a consistent voice for islands to state and federal government, the press, and outside groups. MIC members are selected by town officials and the group is supported by the Island Institute.
