Sen. Hickman, Rep. Frost honor state champion Maranacook High School Boys’ Alpine Ski Team

AUGUSTA — On Wednesday, May 14, Sen. Craig Hickman, D-Winthrop, and Rep. Sharon Frost, U-Belgrade, presented a legislative sentiment to the Maranacook High School Boys’ Alpine Ski Team in the Senate. The team was honored for winning the 2025 Class B Alpine Skiing State Championship this winter.

“It was a joy to celebrate the Class B Boys’ Alpine Ski State Champions in the Senate this week,” said Sen. Hickman. “Under the leadership of their coaches and the strong example set by their seniors, they shredded down the slopes to victory. I wish them all the best in their future endeavors, in snow and sun, school and career.”

“Our entire Black Bear community is so proud of these athletes,” said Rep. Frost. “It is because of their hard work and dedication that they’ve excelled as skiers, and I congratulate them on bringing home the first state championship in five years.”

The Maranacook Alpine Ski Team is coached by Maine Ski and Snowboard Hall of Famer Ronn Gifford, as well as John Whitney, Lindsay Duca and Andrew Dupuis.

This championship was the Black Bears’ ninth under Coach Gifford’s leadership. At the championship, the Maranacook boys scored 1,552 points, beating out Central Aroostook and Cape Elizabeth. Thatcher Riley of Maranacook was also the giant slalom champion and slalom runner up. The team placed two more skiers in the top 10 of the slalom (Tristan Riley, fourth; Adam Ellis, tied for eighth) and two others in the top 30 (Josh Adams, 15th; Sam Hayes, 28th). In giant slalom, Tristan Riley placed fifth, Adam Ellis finished 10th and Josh Adam came in 11th.
