Sen. Ingwersen bill to expand healthcare workforce opportunities receives committee support
AUGUSTA — Yesterday, the Maine Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee unanimously approved LD 1311, “An Act to Expand Health Care Workforce by Improving Educational Opportunities,” a bill sponsored by Sen. Henry Ingwersen, D-Arundel, that would tackle ongoing workforce issues in the health care sector, increasing access to care in all corners of Maine and strengthening the health of communities.
“Maine’s health care workforce shortages are clear, particularly in rural and underserved communities. These shortages have serious consequences, including reduced access to care, delayed treatment and poorer health outcomes,” said Sen. Ingwersen. “LD 1311 helps break down the barriers that keep talented Mainers from entering the field and strengthening the pipeline of workers we urgently need.”
LD 1311 as amended would establish the Maine Health Care Education Training and Medical Residency Fund, which would provide $1.9 million annually to support health care workforce development in rural and underserved communities. This funding will be used to expand clinical rotation, residencies and preceptorships, as well as support innovative solutions and technological advancements in health care education.
The bill now faces votes in the Senate and House.
