AUGUSTA – Last Friday, Sen. Henry Ingwersen, D-Arundel, visited Hollis Elementary School to celebrate National School Lunch Week. Sen. Ingwersen was welcomed by Erin Miller, who serves as School Nutrition Director of Maine School Administrative District 6.

“As a former teacher myself, I understand the hard work that our support staff and food and nutrition staff do in our schools,” said Sen. Ingwersen. “This work is deeply important for the health, happiness and learning of our students. I am honored to have volunteered at Hollis Elementary School and to meet the wonderful educators and staff that support our children’s futures!”

“National School Lunch Week is truly a celebration of the National School Lunch Program,” said Erin Miller, School Nutrition Director of MSAD #6. “It allows us to educate the community about the healthy and nutritious meals our hardworking school nutrition staff prepare for our students each day. Universal free school meals have had such a profound impact here in Maine, allowing all students equal access to healthy food.  With the cost of food on the rise, this has been more important than ever. We were excited to welcome Sen. Ingwersen to Hollis Elementary School to be able to highlight what healthy school lunches mean for our students.”

National School Lunch Week pays tribute to the National School Lunch Program, which serves 30 million students every day nationwide. In 2022, the Legislature passed LD 1679, School Meals for All, which made Maine the second state in the nation to pass a law ensuring universal free school meals in public schools. The 2024-2025 school year is the third year in which school meals are free for all Maine students.
