Sen. Jill Duson receives recognition from National Women’s Organization

AUGUSTA – The National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) has announced Sen. Jill C. Duson (D-Portland), as a 2024 Elected Women of Excellence Award winner.

This award was created to identify women who have worked tirelessly, often breaking down barriers and overcoming obstacles that once seemed insurmountable, to serve their communities. These pacesetters have engendered an environment where women can now serve in public office and fight for the issues they are passionate about.

“I’m grateful to the National Foundation for Women Legislators for the recognition of the Elected Women of Excellence Award,” said Sen. Jill Duson. “I’m truly humbled by my peers and all those who have supported me in my career in public service”.

“NFWL is built on the spirit of celebrating the remarkable accomplishments of hardworking, dedicated women, and we are thrilled to honor this year’s outstanding leaders,” says NFWL Executive Director Jody Thomas

Sen. Jill Duson is the first African-American woman to serve in the Maine Senate. A child of the Civil Rights Movement, Sen. Duson was inspired by the activism of her mother and empowered local parents who protested and demonstrated for years to achieve court-ordered desegregation of schools in her hometown. The Senator served as a member and Chair of the Portland School Committee and also served 19 years as an At-Large City Councilor, including two-terms as appointed Mayor of the City of Portland.

The winners were nominated by their colleagues and constituents from their home states, before being chosen by a distinguished panel of NFWL members.

“We congratulate our winners from this year and look forward presenting them with their award in November,” Thomas concludes.

Through annual educational and networking events, the National Foundation for Women Legislators supports elected women from all levels of governance. As a non-profit, non-partisan organization, NFWL serves as a forum for women legislators to be empowered through information and experience.
