Sen. Libby shares MDOT work plan for state bridge and road projects

AUGUSTA – Sen. Nate Libby, D-Lewiston, is pleased to announce the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for Senate District 21, which comprises the entire city of Lewiston. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation upgrades and maintenance projects.

“As the L/A area continues to grow and expand, it is all the more critical that we maintain our infrastructure,” said Sen. Libby. “I am grateful to the state employees who carry out this work and am excited to see these projects underway.”

According to the MDOT, the work plan covers more than $3,857,000 worth of construction and maintenance in Lewiston for 2022. Statewide, the three-year plan estimates MDOT will invest in 115 miles of highway construction and rehabilitation; 1,057 miles of pavement preservation; 2,162 miles of light capital paving for roads and highways; 353 safety and spot improvements; and 235 bridge projects.

The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work for some communities in Senate District 21 in 2022:

 Bicycle/Pedestrian:

  • In Lewiston, minor crossing improvements plus community outreach and education to middle school students to improve pedestrian conditions around the “Five Corners” Intersection.
  • In Lewiston, new installation of a new high visibility pedestrian crossing on Route 202 beginning at Bearce Avenue and extending north 0.25 of a mile to Montello Street.

Highway Paving/Rehabilitation:

  • In Lewiston and Auburn, highway paving on Russell Street beginning at Turner Street and extending southeast 2.63 miles, including bridges (#6260, #6331, #6383, #6384, #6385, #1370) and various ramps.
  • In Lewiston, highway paving and mill and fill on Alfred Plourde Parkway beginning at Pleasant Street and extending southwest 0.23 of a mile.
  • In Lewiston, highway paving and mill and fill on Route 126 beginning at Golden Road and extending northeast 1.56 miles.

Highway Safety and Spot Improvements:

  • In Lewiston, highway paving and intersection improvements at various locations. Improvements include fiber optic installation, vehicle detection, signal upgrades, and ADA improvements at selected intersections.
  • In Lewiston, highway paving and improvements on East Avenue beginning at Fairlawn Avenue and extending southwest 0.59 of a mile to Tampa Street.
