Sen. Ned Claxton earns a perfect score from Maine AFL-CIO for voting record supporting working families
AUGUSTA — Sen. Ned Claxton, D-Auburn, received a perfect score from the Maine AFL-CIO’s 2021 Legislative Scorecard for his voting record to promote fair wages, safe work environments and support working families. Sen. Claxton was one of 18 senators to earn a perfect score. The Maine AFL-CIO scored 12 initiatives considered by the 130th Maine Legislature.
“It’s a privilege to fight for hardworking Mainers each and every day I serve in the Senate,” said Sen. Claxton. “These folks show up and get the job done on a daily basis, and we have relied on them even more so during the pandemic. They have our backs, and I’m proud to have theirs in Augusta.”
Sen. Claxton has a long track record of fighting for Maine workers and families in the Legislature. This year, he sponsored LD 824, “An Act To Extend the Protections Provided to State Employees upon the Expiration of Labor Contracts to Other Public Sector Employees.” The new law ensures that public employees remain eligible for merit increases in the case of a contract expiring before a new one is agreed upon. Sen. Claxton also co-sponsored the Buy American and Build Maine Act, sponsored by Senate President Troy Jackson, D-Allagash, which would have supported American companies and Maine workers by giving preference to Maine-based businesses, workers and American manufacturing when the state awards procurement contracts.
Founded in 1956, the Maine AFL-CIO is a state federation of more than 160 local labor unions, representing more than 40,000 Maine workers and retirees. The organization works to improve the lives and labor conditions of its members and all working people across the state.
