Sen. Pierce shares 2025 MDOT work plan for state bridge and road projects

AUGUSTA — On March 14, 2025, Maine Senate Majority Leader Teresa S. Pierce, D-Falmouth, announced the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for Senate District 25. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation upgrades and maintenance projects.

“As a member of the Legislature’s Transportation Committee, I believe updating and maintaining our state’s infrastructure is one of the best ways to keep our economy moving,” said Sen. Pierce. “Through this work plan, we will see improvements to our travel ways, working waterfronts and ports that serve Maine people each and every day. I’m proud to have supported funding for these projects on the floor of the Senate and look forward to their completion.”

According to the Maine DOT, the three-year work plan makes a historic $4.8 billion investment in construction and maintenance of transportation infrastructure across the state. It includes 2,716 individual work items for the calendar years 2025, 2026 and 2027.

In 2025, the Maine DOT will undertake numerous projects to improve transportation in Senate District 25, such as replacing multiple bridges and designing water pump station replacements to mitigate the risk of historic flooding along Casco Bay.

The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work by MDOT for communities in Senate District 25 in 2025:

Bicycle/Bus/Pedestrian

  • Falmouth: Rehabilitate the on-road sidewalk on route 1, beginning at Bucknam Road and extending north 1.65 miles to the Cumberland town line. PACTS sponsored.
  • North Yarmouth: Through a Municipal Partnership Initiative Program, construct a new on-road sidewalk/trail on Route 115 beginning at Dozer Street and extending south 0.33 of a mile to Batson Road. PACTS sponsored.

Bridge and Structural Maintenance

  • Cumberland: Replace Tuttle Road Bridge over Interstate 295 and Route 1 and MCRR, located 1.64 miles north of the Falmouth town line. 
  • Cumberland: Replace Noyes Bridge on Route 9 over Mill Brook, located 0.18 of a mile north of Cross Road.
  • Falmouth: Paint Presumpscot River bridge on Interstate 295 Southbound over Presumpscot River, located 0.79 of a mile west of Lunt Road.
  • Falmouth: Make improvements to Falmouth Spur Bridge on Interstate 495 Eastbound over Interstate 295, located 0.34 of a mile east of Route 9.
  • Gray: Paint Sweetser Bridge on Depot Road over Royal River, located 0.39 of a mile west of Town Farm Road.
  • Yarmouth: Replace Route 1/ I-295 Bridge over Interstate 295, located 0.04 of a mile north of Interstate 295 northbound Exit 15.
  • Yarmouth: Make improvements to the Falls Bridge on Route 88 over Royal River, located 0.10 of a mile north of Main Street.
  • Yarmouth: Make improvements to Interstate 295 Bridges over Route 88, located 0.69 of a mile south of Interstate 295 Route 17 ramps.
  • Yarmouth: Make improvements to East Main Street Bridge over Route 1, located 0.16 of a mile south of North Road.
  • Yarmouth: Make improvements to Ellis C. Snodgrass Memorial Bridge on Gilman Road over Casco Bay, located 0.53 of a mile south of Drinkwater Point Road.

Drainage Maintenance

  • Falmouth: Replace a large culvert on Babbidge Road, located 0.18 of a mile southeast of the Windham town line.
  • Falmouth: Design 2 water pump station replacements to address soil erosion, bank destabilization, and power outage issues to mitigate the risk of historic flooding along Casco Bay.
  • Falmouth: Make improvements to Interstate 295, located at Exit 10 and Exit 11.
  • North Yarmouth: Replace a large culvert on Route 115, located 0.07 of a mile north of Bumpy Lane.

Highway Construction/Rehabilitation and Safety Improvements

  • Cumberland: Roundabout Construction located at the intersection of Route 26/Skillin Road/ Blackstrap Road. *Project is contingent on Congressional Directed Spending approval. 
  • Gray: Rehabilitate Route 202 beginning 0.09 of a mile south of Wayne Avenue and extending northeast 2.38 miles to the New Gloucester town line. *Project is contingent on Congressional Directed Spending approval.

Policy, Planning, and Research

  • Falmouth: Conduct a feasibility study on Mackworth Island Bridge on Andrews Avenue over Casco Bay, located 0.46 of a mile south of Route 1. Effort will be done in conjunction with the Department of Administration and Financial Services (DAFS) causeway project.
  • Gray: Through a Village Partnership Initiative, conduct a planning study on Route 202, Route 202S, Main Street, and Route 115. On Route 202: Begins 0.14 of a mile east of McConkey Road and extends northeast 1.10 miles. On Route 202S: Begins at Route 26 and extends southwest 0.24 of a mile. Route 115: Begins at Route 4 and extends east 0.67 of a mile.

Transit Service Areas

  • Yarmouth: Make roof repairs at the Yarmouth visitor information center.
