Sen. Rafferty celebrates Community Action Grants awarded to three towns in District 34
AUGUSTA — Sen. Joe Rafferty, D-Kennebunk, is pleased to announce that three towns in Senate District 34 are recipients of a Community Action Grant award from the Community Resilience Partnership. The partnership is administered by the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future to help Maine communities reduce emissions and prepare for the effects of extreme weather events brought on by climate change.
The three towns receiving grant funding, along with grant amounts and project titles are:
Kennebunk — $75,000 – Waterhouse Center Rooftop Solar
Kennebunkport — $80,000 – Adaptation and Flood Mitigation Designs for Increasing the Resilience of Coastal Riverfront Areas in Kennebunkport
North Berwick — $22,500 – Service Provider Grant for York County Soil and Water Conservation District.
“I am grateful for the support my district has received to make our community more resilient against future storms and inclement weather,” said Sen. Rafferty. “These grants will make our towns stronger, our district safer and give us a leg up when the next storms come. While I know we need to do more, these are great projects that will have a meaningful impact, protecting us from inclement weather.”
Funding for the grants came from several sources, including measures passed by the Maine Legislature with Sen. Rafferty’s support:
The Supplemental Budget that was passed by the Legislature in 2024 to increase community resilience and preparedness in the wake of the December 2023 and January 2024 storms;
Funds from the biennial budget authorized by the Legislature in 2023; and
A federal grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The grants in District 34 are part of a historic $8 million in funding for Community Resilience Partnership grants announced by Governor Janet Mills on May 1, 2025. This round of funding will support projects in 166 communities across Maine. For a full list of grant awardees, click here.
