Sen. Rotundo introduces law enforcement information sharing bill

AUGUSTA – On  March 6, 2025, Sen. Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, introduced legislation that would allow law enforcement officers or criminal justice agencies to share information with school officials regarding minors possessing a firearm or other dangerous weapons. The bill, LD 386, “An Act Regarding Information That May Be Shared by Law Enforcement Entities with a School Superintendent or a Principal,” was presented during a public hearing to the Joint Standing Committee on Judiciary.

“This legislation would provide a crucial additional avenue for communicating potential threats to our schools and communities,” said Sen. Rotundo. “This bill clarifies the legality of allowing police officers, sheriffs and other law enforcement entities to contact school officials if they acquire information that indicates a student has a dangerous weapon. This not only increases the safety of our students and school faculty members, but also our communities at large.”

LD 386 is the result of a meeting between the Lewiston Legislative Delegation, the Lewiston Chief of Police, the District Attorney and other members of law enforcement last fall. They discussed ways the State could improve and promote public safety in Maine communities.

The Lewiston Police Department submitted a letter of support that was presented with Sen. Rotundo’s testimony. The Superintendent of the Lewiston Public School System, Jake Langlais, was also present to testify in favor of the bill.

The bill awaits further action in the Judiciary Committee.
