Sen. Rotundo shares 2026 MDOT work plan for state bridge and road projects

AUGUSTA – Sen. Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, is pleased to announce the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for Senate District 21. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation upgrades and maintenance projects.

According to the Maine DOT, the three-year work plan makes a $4.5 billion investment in the construction and maintenance of transportation infrastructure across the state. It includes 2,798 individual work items for the calendar years 2026, 2027 and 2028.

In 2026, the Maine DOT will undertake numerous projects to enhance transportation in Senate District 21, including new walking paths, several bridge improvements and a two-year extension of the pilot bus service connecting the Lewiston/Auburn area to Portland.

“This year will bring many critical improvements to Lewiston’s pedestrian infrastructure, public transit, roads and bridges,” said Sen. Rotundo. “I am proud to have supported these investments in targeted infrastructure upgrades that will advance safety, accessibility and connectivity for all those who live, work and travel in and around the Lewiston area.”

The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work by MDOT for communities in Senate District 21 in calendar year 2026:

Bicycle/Pedestrian

  • Lewiston: On-road sidewalk/trail located at the intersection of Route 196 and South Avenue.
  • Lewiston: On-road sidewalk/trail located at the intersection of Route 196 and Scribner Boulevard. Includes safety improvements at St. Croix Street.
  • Lewiston: Pedestrian safety improvements at the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Russell Street.

Bridge and Structural Maintenance:

  • Lewiston: Improving Route 196’s Dill Bridge (#2229) over Dill Brook. Located 0.02 of a mile south of Foch Street.
  • Lewiston: Replacing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge Ramp D/MCRR Bridge (#1371) over the MCRR. Located 0.12 of a mile west of Route 202.
  • Lewiston: Replacing the deck of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge RAMP A/MCRR Bridge (#1370) over MCRR. Located 0.40 of a mile south of the Auburn town line.
  • Lewiston: Rehabilitating Lincoln Street Androscoggin Mill Bridge (#5689) over Main Canal. Located 0.16 of a mile south of Locus Street.
  • Lewiston: Painting Maine Turnpike Exit 13/MCRR Bridge (#0059) over Maine Central Railroad (MCRR). Located 0.07 of a mile south of Route 196 on Alfred A Plourde Parkway.
  • Lewiston: Replacing Hart’s River Road Bridge (#0093) over Hart’s Brook. Located 0.15 of a mile north of Interstate 95.

Highway Paving

  • Lewiston: Bates Street, beginning at Ash Street and extending north 0.22 of a mile to Route 202.
  • Lewiston: Pine Street, beginning at Canal Street and extending east 0.98 of a mile.
  • Lewiston: Ash Street, beginning at Canal Street and extending east 0.69 of a mile.
  • Lewiston: Municipal Partnership Initiative. Central Avenue, beginning at Russell Street and extending southwest 0.30 of a mile to Campus Avenue.

Special Programs

  • Lewiston, Auburn, Portland: A 2-year pilot, operating a bus service between Portland and Lewiston/Auburn.
  • Lewiston: Pilot project for traffic signal operations.
  • Lewiston: Municipal large culvert replacement on River Road.
