SENATE ENACTS MEASURE TO PROMOTE INNOVATION IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Alfond’s bill improves teacher training for transition to standards-based learning
AUGUSTA–Earlier today, the Senate enacted a bill to promote standards-based learning models.
“Standards-based learning is the best way to allow students to be in charge of their learning. For it to be successful, we can’t lose momentum. We must continue our efforts to ensure that educators have the support and guidance to usher in this innovative and transformative learning model in to the classroom,” said Senate President Justin Alfond of Portland, who is also the bill’s sponsor. “I am proud to see the Legislature’s strong support for this important effort.”
The measure will expand the annual superintendent’s conference organized by the Department of Education to include school board members, school administrators, educators, and other stakeholders.
Maine schools are on track to adopt standards-based learning models at all public schools by 2018. Until then, the conference will focus on different standards-based and deeper-learning models and serve as an opportunity for educators and education leaders to share their successes and challenges.
The Department of Education will also be required to host an annual series of teleconferences to support standards-based learning strategies, promote the implementation of standards-based learning models, and provide resources to public schools across the state. All materials associated with the efforts will be accessible on the Department of Education’s website.
“I urge the Governor to join the Legislature and teachers and students by supporting innovative education to strengthen our public schools,” said President Alfond.
The bill, LD 1129, “An Act To Promote Innovation in Public Schools,” now moves to the Special Appropriations Table for funding consideration. If funded, it will go Governor’s desk for his signature.
