AUGUSTA — On Tuesday, June 3, the Maine Senate unanimously sent LD 280, “An Act to Establish Lifetime Ferry Passes for Retired Maine State Ferry Service Employees,” to the Governor’s desk for final approval. The bill was introduced by Sen. Pinny Beebe-Center, D-Rockland.

“Looking out for our island retirees has always been a priority of mine, and now we are one step closer to restoring this benefit to them,” said Sen. Beebe-Center. “For years, our ferry employees worked tirelessly to guarantee safe passage of both island residents and mainland residents where they needed to go. I am grateful that we returned the favor here in the Legislature, and ensured this bill got safe passage through the House, the Senate and all the way to the Governor’s desk.”

As amended, LD 280 would allow eligible Maine State Ferry Service retirees to take two complimentary round trips a month with a vehicle, provided they give at least 24-hour notice for a reservation, and provided they are island residents.

Gov. Mills now has 10 days to sign the bill, veto it or allow it to go into law without her signature.

Sen. Beebe-Center represents Senate District 12, which includes Appleton, Camden, Criehaven UT, Cushing, Friendship, Hope, Matinicus Isle Plantation, Muscle Ridge Islands UT, North Haven, Owls Head, Rockland, Rockport, Saint George, South Thomaston, Thomaston, Union, Vinalhaven and Warren in Knox County.
