SENATOR CAIN’S BOND PROPOSAL TO SUPPORT HIGHER EDUCATION INFRASTRUCTURE ADVANCES

Posted: August 22, 2013 | Senator Cain

AUGUSTA – A bond proposal sponsored by Senator Emily Ann Cain (D-Orono) to support improvements at Maine’s higher education facilities has been included in the bipartisan bond package announced last week. The higher education portion of the bond provides funding for renovations and construction projects on the campuses of the University of Maine System, the Maine Community College System, and the Maine Maritime Academy.

“Maine’s colleges and universities are truly some of our state’s best assets,” said Senator Cain. “It’s essential that they meet high standards to keep up with the education and job training demands of today, and continue to be strong and effective places of learning well into the future.”

In addition to much-needed classroom and building renovations, the bond supports many critical updates to support new and renovated spaces, and equipment to be used in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), including a new science facility at the Maine Maritime Academy, and lab renovations at several of the University of Maine campuses.

“Jobs in the STEM fields are the jobs of the future,” continued Senator Cain. “Maine has the potential to be a leader in many of these cutting-edge industries, and I’m excited to see these fields get the support they deserve to prepare our workforce for good, well-paying jobs.”

The Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee will review the proposed bond package on Thursday afternoon.
