Senator Gerzofsky Named Legislator of the Year by Independence Association

 BRUNSWICK – The Independence Association has named Senator Stan Gerzofsky (D – Cumberland County) as Legislator of the Year. This is the first annual award of its type and is awarded to a legislator who advocates on behalf of individuals with intellectual disabilities.

“It is an honor to receive this recognition,” said Gerzofsky. “I appreciate the work and dedication of staff at Independence Association, and have always found them great to work with on behalf of constituents.”

Independence Association, a nonprofit organization, assists adults and children with disabilities in obtaining a full and inclusive life in their chosen community through 25 programs, including 15 residences, day habilitation and in-home supports, case management, an array of employment supports and class offerings in the communities of Brunswick, Harpswell, Freeport, Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Richmond, and other cities and towns within a 30-mile radius.

According to Ray Nagel, Executive Director of Independence Association, “Stan has been an active supporter of Independence Association.”

Nagel cited a recent example of Gerzofsky’s involvement as a highlight for the award. Earlier this year, Gerzofsky advocated on behalf of an adult with intellectual disabilities who was on a waiting list to receive Residential Services, and was facing bureaucratic barriers. Through his work, Gerzofsky was able to coordinate with the family and DHHS to help the address the individual’s situation. As a result, the individual received approval for services and will be placed in a group home in November.

The award was presented to Senator Gerzofsky at the Independence Association’s annual dinner.

Senator Gerzofsky is currently serving his second term in the Maine Senate representing Senate District 10, which includes Freeport, Brunswick, Harpswell and Pownal.
