Senator Gerzofsky Nominated for National Award
“A true honor.”
Those were the words expressed by Senator Stan Gerzofsky after learning that he has been nominated for the 2012 Defense Community Award in the category of Policymaker/Elected Official of the Year.
The award is given to those who demonstrate leadership in creating effective efforts to develop partnerships with defense communities that enhances a local community and its economic development, as well as dedication and commitment to his/her constituency as a leader and advocate for defense communities.
Steve Levesque, Executive Director for the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority (MRRA), submitted the nomination, citing Gerzofsky’s work from the very beginning with the base closure up to present day.
Gerzofsky’s highlights include:
- serving as a trustee on the Brunswick Local Redevelopment Authority and Governor’s Advisory Council;
- establishing the MRRA Statute;
- drafting the Military Redevelopment Zone Program;
- chairing the State and Local Screening Committee;
- serving on the Housing and Homeless Committee;
- helping secure town commons land;
- leading the effort for an $8 million bond package for MRRA and Southern Maine Community College;
- working to create the Jobs Tax Increment Financing program; and
- sponsoring legislation to boost Maine’s aviation industry.
“I am very humbled by this nomination,” said Gerzofsky. “For me, my work with Steve, MRRA, and the Town has just been a part of my job as Senator.”
Adding, “It has always been about trying to do what is best for our community, region, and state.”
The Association of Defense Communities will make its decision on the award after June 14, 2012.
