SENATOR GERZOFSKY RECEIVES PERFECT SCORE ON EDUCATION RECORD

Posted: October 30, 2013 | Senator Gerzofsky

AUGUSTA – Senator Stan Gerzofsky of Brunswick has received a 100% rating from the Maine Education Association for his support of education issues during the 126th Legislature.

“Education is one of the most important investments we can make as a society,” said Senator Gerzofsky. “The people of Maine know this and our job in the legislature is to ensure we are providing the tools for our students to succeed and the funding necessary for our schools to prosper.”

The Maine Education Association represents 25,000 teachers in Maine and is dedicated to supporting policies and laws to improve public education.

During the 2013 legislative session, Senator Gerzofsky supported the legislature’s two-year budget, which provided an additional $30 million in funding for public schools and provides a path for the state to fulfill its commitment to fund education at the 55 percent level.

Senator Gerzofsky also supported bills to increase suicide awareness and prevention in schools, improve the rules for restraint and seclusion, and increase school funding by phasing out a provision that allowed some districts to reduce funding to their schools.

Senator Gerzofsky led the fight, both in the Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee and in the Senate, to oppose a bill to allow guns in schools, and opposed the Governor’s proposal for the state to take over failing schools, create a voucher system, and lift the cap on the number of charter schools.

The Legislature will reconvene in January 2014.
