SENATOR JOHNSON INVITES RESIDENTS TO INFORMATIONAL SESSION ON CONSUMER PROTECTION
He and Attorney General Janet Mills will share information about fraud prevention and common scams
AUGUSTA—With nearly one in ten Americans falling victim to fraud annually, Democratic Senator Chris Johnson of Somerville is holding a forum with Maine Attorney General Janet T. Mills to share information about existing scams, steps people should take to protect themselves, and what to do if you think you have been targeted by a scam artist. The forum will be on Monday, December 9, at 6:00 p.m. at the Lincoln County Communications Center in Wiscasset.
“An informed consumer is far less likely to be taken in by a scam,” said Senator Johnson. “This information should help people avoid being taken advantage of.”
According to the Federal Trade Commission, nearly ten percent of Americans were victims of fraud in 2011, and according to the Department of Justice, seven percent of Americans were victims of identity theft in 2010.
Senator Johnson and Attorney General Mills will present information about resources available in Maine to help people avoid scams, including the Consumer Protection Division in the Maine Office of the Attorney General, which works to assist Maine consumers and business to resolve disputes and to educate all Mainers about how to protect themselves from financial exploitation.
