Education group praises lawmaker for supporting public schools

AUGUSTA – Senator Ed Mazurek of Rockland has received a 100% rating from the Maine Education Association for his support of education issues during the 126th Legislature.

“Teaching is one of the noblest professions a person can pursue.  Teachers open your mind, provide support, encourage your interests, and inspire you to follow your passions,” said Senator Mazurek, a retired teacher and coach. “A good education provides an equal footing in the race of life and teachers are there to support you all the way.  It is an honor to support them.”

Senator Mazurek is one of 14 Democratic senators to receive a perfect score from the Maine Education Association.

The Maine Education Association represents 25,000 educators in Maine and is dedicated to supporting policies and laws to improve public education.

During the 2013 legislative session, Senator Mazurek supported the Legislature’s two-year budget, which provided an additional $30 million in funding for public schools and provides a path for the state to fulfill its commitment to fund education at the 55 percent level.

Senator Mazurek also supported bills to increase suicide awareness and prevention in schools, improve the rules for restraint and seclusion, and increase school funding by phasing out a provision that allowed some districts to reduce funding to their schools.

Senator Mazurek opposed a bill to allow guns in schools and the Governor’s proposal for the state to take over failing schools, create a voucher system, and lift the cap on the number of charter schools.

The Legislature will reconvene in January 2014.
