AUGUSTA – On Tuesday, Sen. Stacy Brenner, D-Scarborough, Sen. Jill Duson, D-Portland, and Sen. Teresa Pierce, D-Falmouth, welcomed University of Maine Women’s Basketball Head Coach Amy Vachon and several members of the team. Players who visited the State House included seniors Caroline Bornemann and Olivia Rockwood as well as junior Lexi Mittelstadt. The coach and players toured the halls of the Maine State House, met with legislators and discussed their athletic achievements as well as their academic pursuits.

“I’m proud to welcome the UMaine Women’s Basketball Team to the Maine Senate to honor their remarkable achievements,” said Sen. Brenner. “These young women are shining examples and role models to countless young girls across our state. These athletes are a source of inspiration and pride for our entire community.”

“The Black Bears have a proud heritage of dedication and commitment,” said Sen. Duson. “I was lucky to attend the matchup of this team when they played the University of Indiana in Portland this season. It’s an honor to celebrate their success and I’m honored to support these stellar student-athletes in all their future endeavors.”

“It was fantastic to be joined by members of the team today,” said Sen. Pierce. “As a longtime supporter of public education, it’s remarkable to see their success on the court and in the classroom. These women make their state proud, and I’m grateful they took the time to visit me and my colleagues today.”

Earlier this year, the UMaine Women’s Basketball Team were named America East Women’s basketball champions after defeating University of Vermont in the America East Final. The Black Bears triumphed and were awarded the Jeanne L. Rowlands Trophy as well as a qualification for the NCAA March Madness Women’s Tournament. Head Coach Amy Vachon is a Cony High School and UMaine alumna. The UMaine Athletic Program is the only NCAA Division 1 Program in the state.
