AUGUSTA — Sen. Shenna Bellows, D-Manchester, and Rep. Craig Hickman, D-Winthrop, welcomed the Winthrop Field Hockey team to the State House on Jan. 22 to congratulate them on their 2018 Class C State Championship win with a Legislative Sentiment.

Led by Captains Moriah Hajduk, Kate Perkins, Layne Audet, Bre Feeney, and Hanna Caprara and Coach Jessica Merrill, the team won the Class C State Championship over Spruce Mountain, after finishing runners-up in the State Championship game the prior season.  This was the program’s first state championship win in 29 seasons. The team finished 17-1-0 for the year.

“The team’s record and state championship win is a testament to their hard work and dedication,” said Sen. Bellows. “The team’s commitment, persistence and teamwork inspire all of us.”

“It was special to have the team at the State House to be recognized for their achievement,” said Hickman. “I know our entire community is very proud of their hard work, as each of them should be.”

A Legislative Sentiment is a significant expression by the Legislature in recognition of civic and public achievements.
