TUTTLE SWORN IN TO MAINE STATE SENATE

“Humbled by the honor to serve”

 

AUGUSTA—John Tuttle of Sanford was sworn in to the Maine Senate at the State House in Augusta today. Senator Tuttle was elected to the State Senate in November,after serving four terms, eight years, in the Maine House of Representatives.

 

“I feel the people of Maine are looking for constructive leadership in the Senate,” said Senator Tuttle. “Someone who can place the cause of good government above partisan politics. I’m hoping to accomplish that starting today.”

 

Governor Paul LePage administered the oath of office to Tuttle and 34 of his Senate colleagues, all of whom have been elected to serve two-year terms. Tuttle represents Senate District 3, which is made up of the communities of Alfred, Limington, Lyman, Sanford, and Waterboro.

 

Tuttle served 11 terms in the Senate between 1979 and 2012. The 126th Legislature will be his third term in the Senate; he previously served in the Senate in the 112th and 113th Legislatures.

 

While a member of the House, Tuttle sponsored or cosponsored legislation to protect people with mental health disabilities, and improve landlord-tenants relations, and served on the Labor, Commerce, Research, and Economic Development Committee.

 

“I want to thank the people of Senate District 3 for electing me,” said Senator Tuttle. “I am humbled by the honor and will work hard to represent them in the Maine Senate..”

 

Today marked the official start of the 126th Maine State Legislature however, the first day of the Regular Session is expected to begin on January 8, 2013.

 

Of the 35 Senate members, there are 19 Democrats, 15 Republicans, and 1 unenrolled member. Seven are women—all Democrats—and 28 are men: 12 Democrats, 15 Republicans, and 1 unenrolled. There are 17 new members: 10 have recently served in the House of Representatives, one is a former House member and 6 have no previous legislative experience, all Democrats. 18 are incumbents.
