WGAN: State Readies Proposal For No Child Left Behind
AUGUSTA, Maine – Maine is preparing its proposal to be exempted from some of the provisions of the federal No Child Left Behind law. Sen. Justin Alfond (D-Portland) still wants Maine students to face tough standards.
Thirty three states have already received waivers from the original law, and Maine plans to submit its proposal early next month. Under the proposal, progress will be measured based on where a student starts, not on a standard that applies to everyone. Senator Alfond says that will take resources.
Alfond serves on the legislature’s Education Committee and says many Maine schools are already moving to provide testing and goals based on the individual student and not meeting some arbitrary standard. He says implementing the new approach will take additional resources that lawmakers will have to consider next session.
