Work plan for state bridge and road projects unveiled
Sen. Rebecca Millett of Cape Elizabeth is pleased to announce the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for the state and region. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation projects throughout the state.
“Mainers rely on quality transportation infrastructure for nearly every part of their lives,” said Sen. Millett. “I’m glad to see the Department of Transportation making these investments to ensure everyone can safely go about their lives on our local roads, bridges, and pedestrian walkways.”
According to the MDOT, the work plan includes more than $2.3 billion worth of construction and maintenance, of which $511.1 million is scheduled for 604 capital projects in 2018. The 3 year plan estimates MDOT will invest in 229 miles of highway construction; 1,128 miles of pavement preservation; 1,800 miles of light capital paving for roads and highways; 240 spot and safety improvements; and 260 bridge construction projects.
The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work for some communities in South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough in 2018:
Paving projects:
- Paving on Route 77 from Spurwink Avenue and extending northwest 0.34 miles in Cape Elizabeth
- Paving on Broadturn Road beginning 0.09 miles south of Glendale Drive and extending south 1.14 miles in Scarborough
- Paving on Broadturn Road beginning at Route 22 and extending south 2.40 miles in Scarborough and Buxton
- Paving on Holmes Road beginning 0.26 miles east of Two Rod Road and extending east to Payne Road in Scarborough
- Paving on Mussey Road beginning 0.02 miles east of Honan Road and extending north 0.63 miles in Scarborough and South Portland
- Paving on Payne Road beginning 0.16 miles north of Milliken Road and extending norh 0.79 miles in Scarborough
Bridge work:
- Work on the Pleasant Avenue Crossing Bridge/Pleasant Hill Road over the Boston and Maine Railroad in Scarborough
- Bridge protective coating work on the Casco Bay Bridge/Route 77 over the Fore River in Portland/South Portland
- Work on the Route 1 southbound bridge/ramp over the northbound ramp of Interstate 295, located off Exit 4 on Interstate 295 southbound
Highway construction and rehabilitation:
- Work on Route 114 from Hannaford Drive to Maple Avenue in Scarborough
Custodial maintenance:
- Removing brush along Interstate 295 from the Exit 44 toll plaza in Scarborough and extending north 8.01 miles to the Portland/Falmouth town line through Scarborough, South Portland and Portland
Bicycle/pedestrian improvements:
- Work on Route 114 from Adams Way to Hannaford Drive in Scarborough
Drainage maintenance:
- Replacing a stone culvert on Route 22 located 0.55 miles east of Saco Street in Scarborough
