Sen. Lawrence, Rep. Runte recognize 2025 York County Community College Student of the Year
On Wednesday, April 23, Sen. Mark W. Lawrence, D-Eliot, and Rep. Gerry Runte, D-York, recognized the 2025 York County Community College (YCCC) Student of the Year, Zoe LaFleur-Klef of York, and presented her a legislative sentiment following a ceremony at the Blaine House. Zoe was one of seven students selected from the Maine Community College System to earn this award.

“York County is home to some of Maine’s brightest leaders and Zoe is a great example. Her work ethic and drive for success in and out of the classroom is remarkable and will allow her to thrive in the workforce,” said Sen. Lawrence. “Our region is grateful for her commitment to caring for others with a planned future career in nursing. It was my honor to recognize Zoe for this prestigious award, and I look forward to seeing what she accomplishes next.”
“Zoe’s hard work, dedication and leadership at York Community College are truly inspiring,” said Rep. Runte. “I’m honored to help celebrate her well-deserved recognition as Student of the Year and wish her success as she continues her education in nursing.”
Each year, the MCCS Student of the Year Award is given to one student from each of Maine’s seven community colleges. Students are chosen for their academic success, service to others and commitment to making a difference on campus.
Zoe is enrolled in YCCC’s nursing program. Zoe’s journey at YCCC started with a short-term phlebotomy training program where she developed an interest in health care. She enrolled in YCCC’s health studies program and then nursing, which she has pursued with determination and excellence. She is a tireless advocate for students and serves as president of both the Student Government Association and Nursing Club.
She plans to graduate from YCCC in May 2025 and already has a job waiting for her. She plans to continue her education in nursing at Southern New Hampshire University.
