Sen. Ingwersen announces details for third meeting of the Deed Fraud Prevention Commission
AUGUSTA — On Wednesday, Nov. 5, Sen. Henry Ingwersen, D-Arundel, will convene the next meeting of the Legislature’s Commission to Recommend Methods for Preventing Deed Fraud in the State. This summer, Senate President Mattie Daughtry, D-Brunswick, appointed Sen. Ingwersen to chair the Commission. The Commission held its first meeting on Sept. 29.
The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. in the Judiciary Committee Room (Room 438) at the State House. Members of the public are invited to attend the meeting in person. It will also be livestreamed online at legislature.maine.gov/Audio/#438.
At this meeting, the Commission will discuss, and review, education materials related to deed fraud (if any) that are used by organizations serving on the Commission. The Commission will also begin to work on its proposed recommendations. In preparation for this meeting, the chairs asked members to draft and submit their initial individual recommendations.
The Commission is tasked with gathering information on the practice and prevalence of deed fraud and reviewing any currently available educational materials regarding the prevention of deed fraud in Maine. It will review current practices, like identity verification, and state laws, such as civil remedies and criminal penalties currently on the books. It will also examine ways to mitigate the fraudulent listing of homes for rent and the use of artificial intelligence for deed fraud. It will provide a report to the Legislature’s Judiciary Committee for the Second Regular Session of the 132nd Maine State Legislature.
