STATEMENT FROM SEN. GOODALL ON GOVERNOR'S BILL SIGNING

Augusta—State Senator Seth Goodall released the following statement upon the signing of his bill, LD 1877 “An Act To Clarify Authorized Associations of Veterinary Practice,” in to law:

“This law was necessary to assist and recognize our successful and developing bioscience industry in Maine. Thriving Maine businesses like IDEXX and emerging businesses like Kennebec BioScience in my hometown, are vital to our economy. Targeting businesses like these will strengthen their economic vitality and will create jobs for Maine people.”

This bill allows a licensed veterinarian to practice veterinary medicine as an employee of a corporation or other legal entity that provides a continuum of veterinarian-related services, such as diagnostic laboratory services, research and development and certification for import or export, as long as that veterinarian remains individually accountable for conduct under that veterinarian’s license. The law was drafted to not impact traditional veterinary practices. This is a change in the law that prohibited a veterinarian from practicing veterinary medicine under another person or corporation.
