CLEVELAND SWORN IN TO MAINE STATE SENATE
“Will work as hard as I can to serve the people of my district”
AUGUSTA—John Cleveland of Auburn was sworn in to the Maine Senate at the State House in Augusta today. Senator Cleveland was elected to the State Senate in November, after previously serving four terms, eight years, in the Maine Senate from 1991 to 1998.
“I’m excited to be back in the Maine State Senate,” said Senator Cleveland. “I’m looking forward to working to improve the economy and create more job opportunities for the people of Maine.”
Governor Paul LePage administered the oath of office to Cleveland and 34 of his Senate colleagues, all of whom have been elected to serve two-year terms. Cleveland represents Senate District 15, which is made up of the communities of Auburn, Durham, New Gloucester, and Poland.
Cleveland is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine, and the former mayor of Auburn. He owns a consulting business, Community Dynamics Corp., which has provided planning, economic and community development services in Maine to public and business clients for nearly 25 years.
Cleveland lives in Auburn with his wife, Debora, and is active in his community as a board member of Museum L-A, member of the Androscoggin Chamber, vice chair of the Auburn Community Development Loan Committee, and founding member of Auburn-Lewiston Breakfast Rotary Club.
“I’m very honored and humbled by the trust and confidence the people of my district have placed in me,” said Senator Cleveland. “I will work as hard as I can to serve the people of my district.”
Today marked the official start of the 126th Maine State Legislature however, the first day of the Regular Session is expected to begin on January 8, 2013.
Of the 35 Senate members, there are 19 Democrats, 15 Republicans, and 1 unenrolled member. Seven are women—all Democrats—and 28 are men: 12 Democrats, 15 Republicans, and 1 unenrolled. There are 17 new members: 10 have recently served in the House of Representatives, one is a former House member and 6 have no previous legislative experience, all Democrats. 18 are incumbents.
