Sen. Patrick to be honored by Maine AFL-CIO as a champion of working people
AUGUSTA – Sen. John Patrick, a Democrat from Rumford, will be honored for his support of working families at the 30th Biennial Maine AFL-CIO Convention Banquet Dinner on Thursday, October 22.
“I am honored to be recognized by the union and to have the opportunity to stand up for the 700,000 Mainers who get up, go to work, and keep our state running,” said Sen. John Patrick. “I take my responsibility to protect the rights of workers and their families very seriously. I will continue to fight make Maine a state of opportunity, where hard work and playing by the rules provide working families a good life.”
Sen. Patrick has been a leader on labor issues over the course of his time in office. In an effort to highlight rising income inequality, Sen. Patrick introduced a bill this past legislative session that would have required large corporations to report the ratio of executive to worker pay. While unfortunately, the bill did not pass, the Federal Securities and Exchange Commission recently released a new rule that will require corporations to report this ratio in 2017.
Others honored at the banquet include Maine AFL-CIO President Don Berry, who is retiring after decades of service to the labor movement, the Fair point Strikers of IBEW 2327 and CWA 1400, and members of AFSCME 1814 (Riverview Psychiatric Hospital) and AFSCME 2968 (State Corrections).
